FAQs about Acupuncture and Traditional Oriental Medicine

An acupuncture and oriental medicine consumers guide is available by clicking on the link below. This guide provides answers to most questions and also useful advice. I have chosen to use this guide published by the Medical Board of California as it better reflects my level of training which is much higher than that required by the State of Montana. You need adobe acrobat installed on your computer to view this file which is in PDF format.

A Consumers Guide to Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

 Conditions that Acupuncture Treats

An acupuncturist may be consulted for specific symptoms and conditions: such as pain, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, migraine, menstrual disorders, intestinal disorders, etc...      Extensive practice and research has shown that acupuncture is effective in helping people with such conditions as well as many others.  It does more than simply relieve the symptoms.  The aim of acupuncture is to treat the whole patient and restore balance between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.     In traditional acupuncture, since all illness is considered the result of an imbalance of energy, treatment can benefit almost any person as long as the degenerative process in the tissues of the body is not too extensive.     Many people also have acupuncture as a preventative treatment or because they feel unwell in themselves but are not ‘ill’ in the western sense.

Questions Answered

A series of treatments are usually necessary to resolve a condition.  Each case is treated individually.  A consultation is required to determine requirements.     Treatments are 45 to 90 minutes in length.  Detoxification/addiction treatments may only last for 20 to 30 minutes.  You should feel more peaceful and relaxed during treatment.  There is little or no pain as very fine, sterile, disposable needles are used.  Treatments are available without the use of needles.     Herbal formulas are usually prescribed to enhance the acupuncture treatments and to provide further care between treatments.       Children of all ages are treated.  Those younger than 6 to 8 years of age may be treated without needles using massage and/or electrical probes.     Many insurance companies cover acupuncture.  Call to verify coverage and discuss options.     First time acupuncture clients allow 2 hours for paperwork, evaluation and treatment
